Beauté
Have you ever felt lost in the vast world of makeup, unsure of where to start or how to keep up with the latest trends? This challenge resonated deeply with me and my friends, inspiring the creation of “Beauté” – a makeup learning app designed with users at its core.
“Beauté” is a mobile app created for makeup enthusiasts of all levels, offering a wide range of tutorials and features. It is designed to ease the process of learning about makeup while making it an enjoyable experience, with step-by-step guides covering everything from the basics to advanced techniques. Whether you’re a beginner looking to learn or a seasoned makeup artist wanting to stay updated, Beauté has something for you.
My journey began with brainstorming sessions aimed at exploring ideas beyond conventional makeup tutorials. To ensure Beauté truly resonated with users, I conducted surveys in order to have a better understanding of their makeup preferences, challenges and aspirations. The results enabled me to create personas and user stories, giving me valuable insights into what my audience truly needs.
While wireframing seemed like the logical first step, I gradually realized the importance of reevaluating my approach due to challenges in user flow. Although I did not follow a traditional user story map, carefully planning each user interaction became central to my process.
With clear priorities in mind, I began crafting wireframes, prototypes and eventually a clickable version of Beaute. These tools were important in visualizing the app’s structure and functionality, paving the way for comprehensive usability testing. The current version of the app consists of the following screens to ensure the operation of the main tasks:
- Discover New Trends
- Makeup Tutorials
- Product Finder
- Community Chat
- Your Own Blog
- Share with Friends
In addition, I conducted a second survey where I got the opportunity to recieve valuable feedback for the app’s design. These insights helped me in shaping Beauté according to my vision while ensuring it met user expectations.
During usability testing, users, particularly beginners, navigated through basic makeup tutorials. Their task was to locate the “Tutorials” section and select the “Base and Prep” category within the clickable prototype. While all users managed to complete the task, some required more clicks than expected, highlighting the need for clearer navigation. Responding to this feedback, I’ve replaced the tutorials symbol with a paintbrush icon for improved visual clarity and intuitive navigation.
Looking ahead, I am planning to introduce interactive tutorials, video tutorials, virtual makeup testing, contouring simulations, and real-time guidance for enhanced user experiences.
After diving into the world of makeup, it became clear that many beginners felt overwhelmed with where to start. This inspired me to focus on supporting newcomers in the makeup world through my app, ‘Beauté.’ By gathering insights from users and conducting thorough testing, I identified key areas where beginners needed the most help. Through intuitive design and user-friendly features like clear navigation and step-by-step tutorials, I aimed to make learning makeup both accessible and enjoyable. With ‘Beauté,’ beginners can confidently explore the world of makeup at their own pace, supported every step of the way.
Reflecting on this journey, I’ve learned the importance of staying focused on initial goals, actively involving users throughout the design process, and embracing a step-by-step approach to design. Recognizing the subjective nature of visual design ensures Beaute evolves in line with user needs and expectations, making it a truly user-centered experience.
